Buddhism and Common Sense – The Key to Inspiring Others
Buddhism is often seen as profound, spiritual, and transformative. But did you know that at its core, it’s also deeply practical? Sensei reminds us that faith must manifest in our daily lives and that common sense and wisdom are essential in our interactions. Today, let’s explore how our actions can reflect the true spirit of Buddhism and inspire those around us.

Buddhism: The Supreme Path of Life
Sensei began by emphasizing that Buddhism constitutes the highest form of reason. Those of us who practice Nichiren Buddhism should strive to be courteous and thoughtful in our actions. He cited the key principle that “faith manifests itself in daily life” and added:
“Buddhism is not an empty theory, nor is it simply for cultivating our minds. It is a teaching for daily life, a profound perspective championed by Mr. Makiguchi and Mr. Toda. Buddhism teaches us how to create the greatest value in living.”
Nichiren Daishonin, too, highlighted this idea, teaching that all phenomena are manifestations of the Buddhist Law. In contemporary terms, this means that our faith must be reflected in our daily behavior. Our actions as members of society must meet the standards of common sense and decency.
Faith Without Wisdom Can Harm
Sensei explained that practicing Buddhism does not grant us a free pass to behave irresponsibly. He said: “If you behave in an unseemly manner and are criticized by others, or if you believe you can do as you please because you practice faith, then you are denigrating the Law.”
He reminded us that Buddhism is a path for human beings—a supreme way of life. Nichiren Daishonin himself emphasized that the Buddha’s teachings are ultimately expressed in actions and behavior.
“The purpose of the Buddha’s appearance in this world lies in his behavior as a human being,” Nichiren taught. Sensei further explained that the Buddha is often called the “hero of the world” because his enlightenment is reflected in his daily actions.
For us as practitioners, this means striving to be individuals of outstanding character, rich in common sense and wisdom.
Practical Wisdom in Everyday Life
To illustrate the importance of common sense, Sensei shared examples close to members’ lives.
Attending Funerals of Other Faiths:
Some members hesitate to attend funerals conducted in accordance with other religions. Sensei stressed that refusing to attend such events can be socially inappropriate. “We attend funerals not to practice another religion but to pay respects to the deceased and pray for their eternal happiness,” he explained. Chanting Daimoku in our hearts during such occasions is the greatest offering we can make.
Additionally, our presence at funerals can form a connection between those around us and Nichiren Buddhism, simply through our sincerity and compassion.
Avoiding Thoughtless Behavior:
Sensei also warned against being overzealous in sharing Buddhism. Visiting someone’s home late at night, just as they are preparing for bed, and keeping them up until midnight for a discussion is not considerate, no matter how pure our intentions. “Even with the best of intentions, your actions could be perceived as a nuisance,” he said. Expecting someone to embrace faith under such circumstances is unrealistic and may only lead to misunderstandings.Speaking with Respect and Care:
When introducing others to Buddhism or offering guidance, Sensei emphasized that our words and actions must reflect respect.“Avoid using coarse or abusive language, and never adopt a patronizing tone. Rude or thoughtless words can create lasting misunderstandings about the Soka Gakkai,” he cautioned.
Our conduct shapes how others perceive our faith. To truly inspire others, we must earn a reputation as well-mannered, kind, and compassionate individuals.
The Importance of Wisdom and Character
Ultimately, Sensei explained, logic alone cannot inspire others to embrace Buddhism. Even if someone agrees with your reasoning, if they dislike your behavior, their view of Buddhism may remain negative.
“This is human nature,” he said.
For this reason, it’s vital to hone our wisdom, polish our character, and let our actions reflect the true spirit of faith. As practitioners, we must become individuals of profound common sense and integrity—people who earn the respect and trust of all around us.
